First Thoughts On Google Plus

In July 2011, Google Plus made its introduction to the world. Still in Beta, Google account holders were able to join this new social networking site and begin building their contacts and interacting with others. People that do not have a Google account, like Gmail, need to be invited to join from an existing member.

Circles

The function that people like the best is the circles. Users can designate different friends into circles, or groups with some type of similarity. For instance, you can place all your family members into one circle, co-workers in another circle, and classmates in yet a different circle. This allows users to easily pick who they share their content with. If you are posting about going to a family reunion, you may not want to share that with your co-workers, so you’d only choose to have the people in your family circle see that status update.

The Hangout

This is another cool feature of Google Plus where you can gather with up to 12 of your friends and hold a webcam chat and see each other while you hangout over long distances. I can see it as the perfect way for freelancers to get together for face to face meetings, no matter where they are in the world. It is a chance for long-distance friends to see each other in actual motion, not just reading their posts and seeing still images. People that travel can hangout with family or friends while they are away using the Hangout function on Google Plus.

So far, Google Plus looks fabulous, and actually better than Facebook. However, people have a lot invested in Facebook, with hundreds of pictures and friends, it will be interesting to see if people completely drop Facebook to use Google Plus, or if people will use both social networking sites.

Buying Speakers for Your Computer

Speakers and Mike

Image via Wikipedia

Unless you have a really fancy laptop, chances are that your computer speakers don’t work as well as you would like. Many of them are too quiet, have too much gain, or sound like they are suspended in an echo box. Buying external speakers can help you chose the specific type of sound that you get while enjoying movies and playing games.

Inexpensive Computer Speakers

You can buy inexpensive computer speakers for as little as $20. You can’t expect them to rival a professional system, but they certainly sound better than most interior speakers. These cheap speakers will give you the basics. They usually have a knob for adjusting volume, but that’s about it.

Mid-range Computer Speakers

If you are willing to spend between $50 and $100, then you can get some very nice speakers for your computer. Some mid-range speakers even come with sub-woofers that will allow you to control the amount of bass in your sound. This can significantly add to the enjoyment of playing high-action video games and watching movies. Many of these speakers allow you to adjust the amount of treble and bass so that you can customize the sound.

Professional Speakers

If you’re not afraid to pay a few hundred dollars for external computer speakers, then start looking into professional level products that offer surround sound and maximum tone configuration. Professional speakers should allow you to hear a pin drop quietly without blowing your eardrums out when an explosion happens on screen. These speakers are all about clarity and precision.

What are some of the best speakers that you have used with your computer?

Should You Rent or Buy Video Games?

If you love to play video games, but you hate spending a lot of money on the newest releases, then you might have thought about using an online video game rental service. The big question, of course, is whether a rental service can help you save money without negatively impacting your experience.

The Advantages of an Online Video Game Service

Whether you will save money by using a rental service depends on how much you typically spend each month on video games. If you prefer playing the same games over and over again, then you might get the most out of buying games instead of renting them. If, however, you like to move on to the next challenge after you have finished one game, then there is a good chance that you can save money by using a rental service.

Rental services are also good for people who like variety. You can play a game for a few days or a few months. It is up to you. Some games might grab your interest for a prolonged period of time. If this happens, then you know that you like the game a lot and you might consider purchasing a copy for yourself so that you don’t have to continue renting it.

The Disadvantage of Video Game Rentals

Video game rental services have a lot of advantages, but you don’t get to keep the games. That could mean that you actually end up spending more money if you keep buying games in addition to renting them. If you can stay disciplined and only buy the games that you love most, though, renting can work in your favor.

The FBI Begins Investigating Scareware Distributors

Downloading computer security software comes with its own set of risks. Known as “scareware,” some programs that claim to identify and eliminate viruses actually contribute their own threats to system security. This has become such a major concern that the FBI has started to investigate scareware distributors.

How Scareware Works

There are several ways to contract scareware. For instance, a website might tell you that it has detected a certain number of viruses on your computer. In order to eliminate these viruses, the site suggests, you must download a piece of security software that knows how to identify the threats.

When you download the supposed security software, though, you’ve actually installed a viruses, keylogger, or other type of malware that was masquerading as beneficial software.

What the FBI Can Do

The FBI hopes to eliminate scareware threats through a program called Operation Trident Tribunal. It’s an international action that pulls resources from countries all over the world to identify scareware distributors.

The FBI has already stopped at least two organizations from distributing scareware. Both of the organizations were based in the US. Investigations in other countries, including Canada, France, the United Kingdom, and Sweden, have lead to at least two arrests and numerous computer seizures.

Reporting Scareware

If you think that you are a victim of a scareware scam, then you can report your concerns to the FBI. This will assist them in identifying some of the most problematic distributors and help them develop cases against people making fake antivirus software.

Have you ever been a victim of shareware? What were some symptoms that lead you to believe that you had been conned?

Your operating system’s registry keeps track of important files. Over time, though, the registry can get cluttered with unnecessary or damaged files. In many cases, the registry will contain multiple copies of the same file. This makes it difficult for your operating system to find the piece of information that it needs to run a certain function. That leads to slower speeds.

To improve your computer’s performance, find registry cleaning software that will identify and eliminate unnecessary and damaged files.

Clear Your Cache

Your Internet browser accumulates a lot of information, called cookies, as you surf websites. These small bits of information can eventually lead to a lot of clutter that burdens your computer. Clear your Internet cache at least once a month to boost speed. Even better, clear the cache every week.

Delete Old Files

Your computer needs plenty of open memory to function quickly. The more files you have saved to your computer, the longer it takes your operating system to perform pertinent functions. Deleting old files will free space on your hard drive. You should also consider using an external hard drive to save important files without burdening your computer.

Why You Should Update Your Software

Software updates are often annoying. They seem to pop up right when you are in the middle of something important. However, despite the brief annoyance, you should always take a few moments to update your computer software. It could help protect you from hours of frustration. If you are a regular wireless internet user, consider updating software to be one of the most essential tasks you should do for your PC.

Security Updates

Many software updates include security changes that make it harder for viruses to infiltrate your computer. For instance, a few years ago, hackers discovered that they could use a technique called “clickjacking” to hijack a computer’s video camera. This allowed them to take pictures of people while they used their computers, or the rooms where their computers sat unused. Adobe updated their security features to prevent clickjackers from taking control of cameras. However, if you didn’t download the update, clickjackers could continue hacking into your system without any barriers.

Similar things can happen with other types of malware.

Get the Best Services

Software updates can also make it easier for you to use programs. Software developers use customer feedback to decide what types of changes they should make in upcoming releases. That means the update that you denied could contain a patch that automatically fixes a problem that you may have been trying to fix for a while. Updating your computer will allow it to work more efficiently with less frustration.

Do you have a tendency to ignore update requests? Have you ever gotten a virus because you didn’t update a key program on your computer?
